Dineline: Tonkatsu Maisen, Megamall

We have been passing by Tonkatsu Maisen every time my partner and I were in Megamall. Unfortunately, it’s always a full house for this restaurant with long waiting queue, especially during dinner time on a weekend. One night after buying some stuff, we’re both craving for a Japanese Curry and decided to check out Tonkatsu Maisen. Poof! Luckily, we were seated immediately! We were actually the only diners at that time, maybe because it already almost 9pm and it’s a weekday.

Just a heads up, Tonkatsu is a Japanese food which consists of a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet; while Maisen means the fountain that spreadedly spout from ground (Japanese believes that water that come from fountain is pure and suitable for cooking). ‘Mai’ means advance or progress while ‘Sen’ means fountain.

Upon entering you’ll really feel the Japanese ambiance with their interiors. Found at the corner is a counter where chefs prepare the meals to be served. We love the ambiance: great lighting and table styles.

While waiting for our food to be served, we were given hot tea and water. Their tea tastes like Green Tea I used to drink from Japan.

Our food was served and the scent coming from the curry set activated my gastric juices signaling I’m ready for a food fight! The scent is so appetizing! The katsu was cooked to perfection… tender, juicy and certainly not overcooked.

I ordered Tenderloin Katsu Curry Set for only Php 395.00. Tenderloin Katsu was served with steamed rice, salad, fruits, pickles and the curry sauce placed in a sauce cup resembling an Aladdin lamp.  Their curry sauce is our new top fave now! It’s not as spicy as Yabu’s curry (which is one of our fave too), but Maisen’s was so tasty and smells really appetizing. It smells so good! The greens and all other ingredients in the salad were fresh, sweet, and crunchy.

My partner, on the other hand, had Chicken Katsu Don Set for only Php 385.00. It consists of Chicken Katsu, steamed rice, pickles, fruits, and miso soup. Katsu Don is a rice bowl with egg mixture on top. According to him, it was okay. Although he got some curry sauce from mine’s then add it up to his bowl. Hahaha!

All in all I really love this place… fast service, servers are very attentive especially in refilling our glasses of water, palatable dishes and well-maintained restroom.
